Introducing Calderdale Family Karate

Calderdale Family Karate was founded in 2012 and is an independently managed Club. Our lessons run on a "not for profit" basis and the proceeds are used to pay for the dojang (training hall) hire and to subsidise membership, and grading fees. Being a non-profit making club means that our instructors do not rely on the club for their income and there is no requirement to "sell" a product. This allows us to offer competitive training fees and equipment at trade prices.

The name of our martial arts style is Tang Soo Do. Tang Soo Do is a traditional martial art from Korea and is often referred to as Korean Karate. Our lessons focus upon the traditional martial arts values of fitness, confidence, respect, and discipline.  These values are balanced against providing a family friendly environment and making classes enjoyable for everyone.

We offer a full martial arts programme for members to practice. This includes, various punching, kicking and striking techniques, forms, self defence, sparring, and weapons practice. The syllabus therefore provides a great way for families and friends to take part and progress in an activity together.

The Club continues to grow in popularity and stature and has 20 Dan grades (black belt members) training regularly at the Halifax, and Brighouse venues. The Club is also active on the tournament circuit and boasts several national and international champions.

Sa Bom Nim (Master) Greenwood is a 7th Dan Black Belt and the Chief Instructor for Calderdale Family Karate. He is one of the highest ranked martial artists in the north of England and has over 30 years’ experience of teaching martial arts. He is also the three-times Tang Soo Do World Champion, and former member of the Team GB squad. Several other Black Belt instructors assist with running the lessons; all are insured and DBS checked. The Club also has several members at all grades who have enjoyed recent success at national, and international competitions.

Are you interested in joining us?

We always welcome new students, but we operate a pre-booking system to ensure we maintain a good instructor to student ratio. We therefore cannot accept new starters who have not pre-arranged to attend lessons. If you would like to attend any of our lessons, please register your interest via the “Contact Us” section. If you have previously practiced martial arts, that's great and this should get you off to a great start. If not, don't worry, we know how daunting going to your first martial arts class can be, but we will try to put you at ease and make you feel welcome.
