Introducing Calderdale Family Karate
The Calderdale Family Karate classes started in 2012. After a modest start, the Club now has around 80 members training at our classes in Halifax, and Brighouse. The Calderdale classes run on a "not for profit" basis and the proceeds are used to pay for the dojang (training hall) hire and to subsidise membership, and grading fees. Being a non-profit making club means that our instructors do not rely on the club for their income and there is no requirement to "sell" a product. This allows us to offer competitive training fees and equipment at trade prices.
The name of our martial arts style is Tang Soo Do. Tang Soo Do is a traditional martial art from Korea and is often referred to as Korean Karate. Our lessons focus upon the traditional martial arts values of fitness, confidence, respect, and discipline. These values are balanced against providing a family friendly environment and making classes enjoyable for everyone.
We offer a full martial arts programme for members to practice. This includes, various punching, kicking and striking techniques, forms, self defence, sparring, and weapons practice. The syllabus therefore provides a great way for families and friends to take part and progress in an activity together.
Sa Bom Nim (Master) Greenwood is a 7th Dan Black Belt and the Chief Instructor for Calderdale Family Karate. He is one of the highest ranked martial artists in the north of England and has over 25 years’ experience of teaching martial arts. He is also the three-times Tang Soo Do World Champion, and former member of the Team GB squad. Several other Black Belt instructors assist with running the lessons; all are insured and DBS checked. The Club also has several members at all grades who have enjoyed recent success at national, and international competitions.
